HUNTERS from Newfoundland will venture onto the treacherous ice off Labrador
this week to kill young harp seals. But they may go home before catching their
quota—in part because of the male anti-impotence drug, Viagra.
The demand for products derived from seals has been in decline for years.
Campaigns by wildlife pressure groups have put shoppers off clothing made of
seal fur as well as seal oil, which is rich in beneficial fatty acids. British
pharmacy chains Boots and Superdrug recently banned seal oil from their
products.
That leaves dried seal penises, considered an aid to male sexual performance…
