Hang on to that fat

FAT sucked out of thighs or buttocks during liposuction might be a plentiful
and practical source of stem cells, says Marc Hendrick from the University of
California in Los Angeles.

Hendrick and his colleagues have turned stem cells harvested from human fat
into bone, muscle and cartilage, and expect to be able to form neural tissue
too. These tissues could be used to repair damage caused by injury or
stroke.

It’s easier to get stem cells from fat than from bone marrow, says Hendrick,
