As an immunologist and cell biologist at the Open University, Caroline Pond
is fascinated by how and why scientists intervene in the natural world. The book
to read, she says, is E. O. Wilson’s Consilience (Abacus Books, 1998) a tour de
force that combines the history of scientific enquiry with psychology,
sociological theory and a formidable knowledge of biology .

Also on Pond’s list is The Plato of Praed Street: The life and times of
Almroth Wright by Michael Dunnill (The RSM Press, 2000). It shows, she says, how
little the motivation, perversities and frustrations of scientists have changed…
