Watch out for BSE

30 June 2001

Three international agencies want all countries to look out for BSE. The
disease is likely to have spread worldwide in animal feed containing meat and
bonemeal (MBM) exported from countries such as Britain
(Â鶹´«Ã½, 10 February, p 10).
Thailand and Indonesia are most at risk, because they imported
large quantities of MBM. At a meeting in Paris last week, the World Health
Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Animal Health
Organization declared that “ruminant MBM . . . should not be fed in any case to
ruminant animals”.
