TEACHERS are more likely to die of autoimmune diseases than other
professionals. The finding emerged from a study of death certificates from 1985
to 1995 by Stephen Walsh and Laurie DeChello of the University of Connecticut
Health Center in Farmington.
They identified people who died from any of 13 autoimmune diseases,
categorising them by profession. Irrespective of sex or ethnic background,
teachers were significantly more likely than other professionals to die of
autoimmune diseases (The Journal of Rheumatology, vol 28, p 1537).
