A PARTIALLY paralysed man has been able to walk again with the help of
physiotherapy and electrodes implanted into his spinal cord.

The 43-year-old man began treatment in October 1999, four years after an
accident left him almost completely paralysed. But because his spinal cord was
only partially severed, he still had some sensation and could contract his
muscles very weakly.

The patient began his treatment in a harness above a treadmill to practise
his walking. In the next stage, he got small electric shocks through electrodes
inserted below the injury site.
