Making a meal of it

By Barry Fox

The publisher Macmillan wants people to get their teeth into its books.
Infants love chewing them, the firm says, and even thick laminated pages do not
deter determined book chompers.

Macmillan’s answer (GB 2361209) is to admit defeat and make
kids’ books with a non-toxic chewable part that they’ll find irresistible. The
spiral-bound printed pages are looped to one side of the spine, and a thick lump
of plastic shaped like a slice of bread is looped on the other side. The plastic
is filled with water or gel so that it’s squashy and positively invites
chewing.
