Bad for baby

23 February 2002

IF YOU’RE pregnant, your state of mind could have serious consequences for
the health of your child.

In a study of 634 women, Jacques Dayan of the University Hospital of Caen,
France, and his colleagues found that pregnant women are twice as likely to
undergo preterm labour, which can lead to premature birth, if they are depressed
(American Journal of Epidemiology, vol 155, p 293).

“Most of the cases of depression or anxiety could easily be detected and
treated during pregnancy,” says Dayan.
