Come hell or high water

BRITAIN’s great outdoor events, such as this month’s Boat Race on the Thames, the Glastonbury music festival and the tennis at Wimbledon have this much in common: they’re all at the mercy of the weather.

While no one can stop a sudden downpour, accurate forecasts at least allow organisers to make plans to minimise the disruption. At the moment, something as localised as a thunderstorm is hard to predict. Even Britain’s Met Office, which is at the forefront of weather research, can only issue forecasts for areas of 144 square kilometres—roughly the size of inner London.
