The people in the stands at this year’s Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City appeared to be exerting themselves almost as much as the athletes. A mind-boggling 11,575 people were treated for medical injuries, but only 1377 of them were competitors, according to Intermountain Health Care, which provided medical services for the games. Most injuries were minor, but 48 patients ended up in hospital. The most common complaints were respiratory infections, sprains and abrasions.
