TONGUE studs can ruin your teeth and gums, a study of 52 young wearers has found. “The longer you have it, the greater the likelihood of complications,” says Dimitris Tatakis, professor of periodontology at Ohio State University. Almost half the subjects who had worn a barbell-shaped stud for more than four years had chipped teeth, and 35 per cent had receding gums (Journal of Periodontology, vol 73, p 289). “It’s caused by the stud banging against the gum,” says Tatakis.
