Attacks put tigers in army' sights

TIGERS in Malaysia could be shot on sight by the army under plans revealed by a government minister from the country’s northern state of Kelantan, on the Malaya Peninsular. The move, which has caused uproar among conservationists, comes amid a sharp increase in tiger attacks in the region.

Attacks on humans have been rare until now, with only around 15 deaths attributed to tigers in the past 22 years, says Dionysius Sharma of the Species Conservation Unit of WWF Malaysia. But in recent months there have been at least three deaths and two maulings in Kelantan.
