Driving down suicides

ENVIRONMENTALLY friendly car engines aren’t just saving the planet. They are also helping to prevent suicides.

The number of people who end it all by inhaling carbon monoxide (CO) fumes from a vehicle has halved since 1975, say Joshua Mott and his colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. They found that the number of people who killed themselves this way fell from 10 per million people to 4.9 per million (Journal of the American Medical Association, vol 288, p 988).
