With this DNA, I thee wed

By Barry Fox

It sounds so simple, but it took seven people to come up with it. Everyone’s DNA carries their unique genetic “fingerprint”, so a group of German inventors suggest sealing a DNA sample such as a hair in an engagement or wedding ring (WO 02/49474). They say putting samples from both bride and groom into the same ring will truly seal the bond of matrimony. It seems churlish to remind the eager inventors that the information in such rings could well be used as a legal weapon in paternity disputes.
