Shock that tumour

HEAD and neck cancers have been eradicated by zapping them with a mixture of electricity and heavy-duty drugs.

The process, called electroporation, completely eliminated primary cancers in 10 of 12 patients, reports San Diego-based biotechnology company, Genetronics. Electrodes positioned around the tumour blast it with an electrical pulse. That shocks pores on the surface of the cells to open, admitting a powerful anti-cancer drug called bleomycin exclusively into the tumour tissue.

Four weeks later, no cancer cells were detected in biopsies of the tumour area taken from the 10 successfully treated patients, said Genetronics’ Martin Burian, who reported the results…
