Tough but not sexy

19 October 2002

HIGH levels of testosterone might give men tough-looking faces but, contrary to popular opinion, that doesn’t necessarily make them more sexually attractive.

John Swaddle and Gillian Reierson of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, digitally altered mugshots of 21 men to simulate varying testosterone levels, with high levels producing taller faces with larger jaws, for example.

A panel of women thought such faces were more physically dominant, but testosterone levels did not affect their attractiveness, the researchers will report in a future issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
