OIL SPILL
A stricken oil tanker damaged in gales off north-west Spain is threatening a major ecological disaster along the coasts of Portugal and Spain. As Âé¶¹´«Ã½ went to press, the tanker Prestige had broken in two and was sinking. It had already spilt 20,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, some of which has deposited as a thick sludge along 100 kilometres of Spain’s Galician coast. Authorities have imposed a temporary fishing ban, and environmentalists have mounted a rescue operation to save oil-soaked birds.
