Easier on the eyes

Deep Video Imaging of Hamilton, New Zealand, has come up with a way to make pop-up menus on mobile phone screens easier to read (WO 02/089102). DVI’s screen is made from two transparent LCDs, one on top of the other. A backlight illuminates them both. A background image – such as a photomessaging picture used as “wallpaper” – is displayed on the lower screen, while foreground graphics or text are shown on the upper one. This has the effect of making menus or animations stand out more clearly.
