Sex aid for pandas

IN A bid to encourage female giant pandas to breed, a team of Chinese researchers can now inject them with extra reproductive hormones.

Low levels of follicle stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone are often blamed for the animals’ failure to reproduce. Now researchers led by Mu-Yuan Zhu of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou have sequenced the panda genes which make the hormones, and used the information to genetically engineer small quantities of the proteins, they will report soon in Animal Reproduction Science.
