AT NEARLY 4 kilograms, The Migration Atlas weighs in at the equivalent of 800 goldcrests. This shelf-bending weight is its only disadvantage. For any birdwatcher who has marvelled at migration this book is a must.

And there is a fascination about migration that few of us can resist. It’s through ringing birds that we know a little of the astonishing feats of migrating birds, such as the British-ringed Arctic tern…
