NO NEED FOR RABBITS

Tests based on white blood cells could spare 200,000 rabbits from animal experiments every year, the European Commission said last week. The tests detect bacterial, viral and fungal contaminants in medicines that cause fever. Toxicologists previously detected them by injecting medicines into rabbits and looking for a rise in body temperature. The six new tests look for chemicals secreted by blood cells called monocytes.
