Springy studs save careers

THE playing careers of footballers and other sports players could be extended if they switched to wearing a new type of boot. So claims a company that has worked out how to cushion feet from damage caused by running and jumping on hard ground in studded boots.

Conventional six-studded boots have two studs in the heel, two under the ball of the foot and two nearer the toes. This stud pattern focuses pressure on particular areas on the sole of the foot, and some of the pressure points coincide with the position of key joints.
