INSPECTORS IN IRAQ

Nuclear inspectors are set to return to the Tuwaitha nuclear complex in Iraq this week – but they are being barred by the US from checking on most of the radioactivity there. Of 70 buildings containing nuclear waste and radioactive sources, they can only inspect the four to which they have legal access under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency has become increasingly alarmed at reports of looting at Tuwaitha since the US took over the site in early April. The agency says it has a “moral responsibility” to ensure that all the radioactivity on the site is safe, but…
