Gel quells dental hell

People with hypersensitive teeth may welcome a new dental gel that has been developed in Italy. The tooth pain caused by hot or cold food, or even brushing, is due to tiny tubular pores in the teeth that expose nerve endings.

So Italmed of Florence has invented a gel to block the pores. It contains insoluble strontium fluoride powder, finely ground into particles measuring less than 5 micrometres across, mixed with soluble potassium fluoride and water, and cellulose gel to stop particles clumping together (WO 03/037283). When wiped over teeth, the insoluble particles block the troublesome tubes.
