HELIOS CRASHES

A remote-controlled solar aeroplane developed by NASA plunged into the Pacific Ocean during a test flight last week. The Helios aircraft held the altitude record for a non-rocket-powered aircraft after reaching 29,500 metres in August 2001. The experimental unmanned plane crash-landed 29 minutes after taking off from a US airbase on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Helios was testing an experimental fuel cell system in preparation for a longer flight later this month. NASA has yet to determine the cause of the crash but has appointed accident investigators.
