IRAQI SITE IN DANGER

UNESCO – the UN’s cultural wing – has named the ancient city of Assur in Iraq a world heritage site and placed it straight onto the list of sites that are in danger. The archaeological site, which sits on the west bank of the Tigris river, dates from the third millennium BC and was the religious capital of the Assyrian empire. It had been threatened by a dam planned by Saddam Hussein’s regime. While the project has been placed on hold for now, there are fears that it will be revived.
