Born Gary Weinstein in Azerbaijan, he took his mother’s surname to help assimilate. As Garry Kasparov, he become Soviet Under-18 Champion, and World Junior Champion by 1980. In 1984, he battled Anatoly Karpov for five months without a clear result. A year later, Kasparov beat Karpov to became the youngest ever world champion at 22 – a title he held for a record 15 years. Kasparov lost to Vladimir Kramnik in 2000 but remains the world’s highest ranked player. In 1989 Kasparov played Deep Thought, a precursor to Deep Blue.
