AS AN attempt to fill the gaps in our knowledge of climate change, it is hard to find fault with the research programme announced this week by the Bush administration (see “US answer to climate change is more research”). Yet it is the policy vacuum surrounding it that is so disappointing. The White House is still ignoring the near consensus on global warming among scientists and is making no serious attempts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
