Space jewel hunter

By Alison George

Meteorites are in Bill Cassidy‘s blood. After leaving the US Navy Active Reserve in 1946, he chose geology at the University of New Mexico just because it had an institute of meteoritics.Eventually he became professor of geology and planetary science at the Pittsburgh university. He started out studying impact craters, but a hunch about Antarctica reshaped his career. In 1976 the first US meteorite-collecting expedition took place. It was to evolve into the Antarctic Search for Meteorites project. ANSMET has now logged some 10,000 specimens. Cassidy’s book Meteorites, Ice, and Antarctica is published by CUP.
