HIV VACCINE

TRIALTrials have begun in the US and South Africa of the world’s first vaccine designed to protect against the strain of HIV that is ravaging Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Developed by researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the US army, the vaccine is a weakened form of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus, which causes disease in horses but is harmless to people.

The virus is engineered to make an HIV protein that the researchers hope will trigger immunity against the HIV virus itself.
