Richard Bentall‘s dissenting ideas about the nature of madness run to 500-plus pages in his book, Madness Explained (Allen Lane, 2003). But his career shows equally strong academic credentials: a BSc and then a PhD in experimental psychology at University College of North Wales, Bangor, clinical training at the University of Liverpool and an MA in philosophy applied to health care from Swansea. After working as a forensic clinical psychologist he returned to academic life at the University of Liverpool, where he became professor of clinical psychology in 1994. He is currently professor of experimental clinical psychology at the University of Manchester.…
