WIRELESS sensors that utilise the body’s capacity to conduct electricity could monitor a person’s vital signs without troublesome wires or radio links.

Researchers at the University of Bremen in Germany told the World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, held in Sydney last week, that they have designed sensors that can share data by sending electrical signals through the body. Such devices placed on the skin could measure a person’s pulse, or their blood chemistry.

The research was initially funded by EADS Astrium, a space company that hoped to use the technique to monitor astronauts’ vital signs. The researchers…
