ALBERTO Santos-Dumont, inventor of dirigible lighter-than-air craft, used to take one of his smaller models for an evening cruise down the Champs Elysées in Paris, tethering it to a chair whenever he stopped for a drink at a café. This gem comes from the opening chapter of Writing on Air. This collection of essays, short fictions and poems – some brilliant, some bonkers – will delight anyone who has an interest in both air and writing.
