Digital fix sorts your video tape clutter

THE annoyance of hunting for footage of a wedding or birthday in a clutter of poorly labelled video tapes could soon be a thing of the past. Two Japanese companies have unveiled a new breed of digital video recorder that not only transfers the contents of VHS tapes to DVD but also indexes the contents.

The new machines include a hard disc, like the ones inside PCs, and a drive that records DVDs. Users connect their VCR to the machine and play a tape, which it initially records on the hard disc as digital code.
