Web divorce cuts out lawyers

By Barry Fox

27 September 2003

An automated DIY divorce system could put divorce lawyers out of business. Randolph Finney of Seattle proposes a web page that asks a series of questions about the couple, including their ages, occupations, salaries and the number, age and sex of any children involved.

Using a set of rules based on local laws where the would-be divorcees live, the system calculates a potential settlement including levels of alimony and child support and generates the appropriate, completed divorce documents (US 2003/0158848).

All that remains is for both parties to agree on the proposed financial settlement.
