SNEAKING off to a nightclub or pop concert is about to become harder for teenagers in Finland. Parents there may soon be able to track their children’s movements via their mobile phones. Under proposed laws to be discussed by the parliament in November, parents would be able to check up on their kids simply by dialling a number.

The proposals take advantage of a European Union directive that came into force last month, requiring mobile phone operators to provide the location of a caller to emergency services. For now, a phone can only be traced to the base station relaying…
