Designer steroid

25 October 2003

A SWATHE of top American athletes are being investigated after urine samples taken at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in June tested positive for a “designer” steroid. If found guilty of doping, the athletes could be stripped of medals they won at the championships and banned from competing in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

The drug in question is tetrahydrogestrinone (THG). It is structurally similar to the banned drug gestrinone, an anabolic steroid that some athletes take to boost muscle strength. Unlike gestrinone, however, the designer drug is not picked up by standard urine tests.
