Smell test for schizophrenia

TESTING a person’s sense of smell can reveal whether they will develop schizophrenia, according to Warrick Brewer of the University of Melbourne, Australia. He says the test could be the first reliable tool for early identification of those at risk.

Schizophrenia, which affects 1 in 100 people and often appears in early adulthood, is characterised by hearing voices or having delusions of persecution. It is known that people suffering from the disorder often have trouble identifying smells – labelling the scent of pizza as that of an orange, for instance, or the smell of bubblegum as smoke.
