IT IS rare that politicians actually spill blood for their cause. But credit where credit is due. As part of a wider campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of toxic chemicals, the European Commissioner for the Environment, Margot Wallström, has allowed 40 millilitres of her blood to be drawn and tested for any lingering pollutants.

What’s more, Wallström is happy to tell the world that her blood contains 28 toxic chemicals including the well-known organochlorine pesticide, DDT, banned in Europe in 1983 but still used in the tropics to combat mosquitoes.
