YOU could call this latest epistle from Lester Brown, the grand-daddy of environmental advocacy, a smart piece of recycling. His big themes are certainly familiar. But the founder of the Worldwatch Institute, a green Washington think tank, and current custodian of another, the Earth Policy Institute, always has interesting things to say.

This time Brown’s topics are how the world is running dry as vital underground water reserves are pumped dry; how the world’s croplands are shrinking as soils erode away; the omnipresent threats of global warming; and the social crises…
