IN 1968, a US B-52 bomber carrying four nuclear warheads crashed in Greenland near Thule air base, scattering plutonium over a frozen fjord. Civilian workers struggling to clean up the mess sipped drinks cooled with ice chipped from trapped icebergs – ice they now say has given many of them cancer.

Next week they are taking their case for compensation from the Danish government, which presides over Greenland, to the European Parliament.

The Danish Construction Company employed 1200 civilians at the US military base at Thule. Many helped to recover the bomber wreckage and to scrape the contamination off the ice.…
