Salamander is about to reveal its secrets

THE first steps have been taken towards uncovering the genetic secret of the salamander’s ability to regenerate a leg or tail. Despite decades of efforts, little progress has been made towards understanding this creature’s amazing ability. While scientists studying lab favourites like mice or zebra fish can draw on vast resources, those studying salamanders often have to start from scratch. Much work on regeneration has focused on other animals (Âé¶¹´«Ã½, 27 September, p 40).
