iTunes hacker is out of sync

A NOTORIOUS programmer who hacked Apple’s iTunes is coming under fire from people who fear his actions may lead to unwanted restrictions on music downloads.

iTunes allows encrypted songs to be downloaded for 99 US cents each. But last week it was revealed that Norwegian programmer Jon Johansen has developed a simple program called QTFairUse which allows them to be copied.

Since iTunes was launched in April it has sold more than 14 million songs, making it the most successful paid-for music download service. It is also the least restrictive, and Johansen has been criticised by advocates of free access…
