IT IS a lethal agent that kills more children under the age of five than malaria, measles or AIDS. In fact, across the developing world it is the fourth biggest cause of death and disease, period. Yet the chances are that you will never have heard of the problem.

Stumped? Here’s a clue. Next time you boil the kettle or put a meal in the microwave, reflect on the fact that more than a third of humanity – that’s around 2.4 billion people – have to cook every day on traditional stoves that burn wood, crop residues or dung. And what do such stoves give off?…
