The next generation of photographs and videos will have built-in face recognition capabilities to make video archives and picture databases easier to search. The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) which sets picture and video standards, has announced that its next standard, MPEG-7, will retrieve a scene featuring a particular person from 24 hours’ worth of video footage in just 1 second. The search will be based on a picture of that person. The group says the standard could revolutionise the way video archives are managed.
