Elias Zerhouni was born in Nedroma, a small town in Algeria. As a young medical graduate with a passion for radiology he arrived in the US in 1975. In a career path described as meteoric by colleagues, Zerhouni became director of the department of radiology at Johns Hopkins University in 1996 and executive vice-dean of the medical school in 1999, preceded by a stint as vice-dean for research.
