WILDLIFE books are usually either a pocket guide for the amateur or a scholarly tome for the expert. Snakes of the United States and Canada is somewhere in between – the consultant biologist will find everything she needs to know about whatever snakes may be involved in a project, while the amateur – well, now I know why the smooth green snake my daughter found in Canada last summer smelled so bad.
