The worm that turned nasty

THE fast-spreading MyDoom computer worm shattered confidence in internet security this week when it brought down a major software company’s website. Security experts fear MyDoom’s success will prompt further debilitating attacks on websites.

The MyDoom worm mounted a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack on a scale never seen before. It flooded the Utah-based SCO Group’s website with requests for its homepage early on Sunday morning, and is programmed to continue doing so until 12 February. The requests came from computers the worm had infected.
