OPINIONS varied from “perfectly pleasant” and “fresh taste” to “fruity” and “different”. But no one died or even threw up last week when Âé¶¹´«Ã½ staff sampled the first beer brewed with genetically modified ingredients to go on sale in Europe.

Kenth lager is named after Kenth Persson, a brewer in Sweden who developed the beer with Bioteknikcentrum, a PR organisation representing Sweden’s biotech industry. “It’s the first GM-labelled product in Sweden, and the first GM-labelled beer in the world,” says Mattias Zetterstrand of Bioteknikcentrum.
