Wildlife loses out in ruling on Belize dam

A VESTIGE of the British Empire has controversially stamped its authority on a dam project in the central American state of Belize. The Privy Council in London, still the final court of appeal for Belize, has ruled that the country’s government acted within the law when it approved the building of a dam in the biggest rainforest in the region.

Two of the five judges dissented, on the grounds that the hydroelectric project, which will damage the habitat of rare species such as jaguars, tapirs and macaws, is based on flawed science.
